Its Cake Time!

February 21, 2014
February 21, 2014

So I was at work today….as I am everyday…working diligently and I realized that this weekend is my boss’s 60th birthday. Now most people wouldn’t care a scrap about this sort of thing, but my boss is actually really awesome and so I asked the office manager / his personal assistant if there were any plans in the works for the big day, to which he replied that he was going to get a card…

LAME.

So, I, Jake, decided to let the wife know that we should do something better than that…lets bake a cake I said. And then she said okay, but wait…lets make it really special. It’s his 60th birthday after all. As soon as I saw that (we were emailing), I knew I was in for a long night because I know how Jilly thinks…and the words “really special” mean something crazy, over-the-top and probably going to consume an entire night! And, ding ding ding I was right!

She has met the boss several times, and knew that he likes golfing…which is really an understatement. Bobby (the boss) LOVES golfing. In fact I think its a requirement if you work in my office to love golfing on some level (although I think i’m the exception to that rule, but don’t tell anyone because I really like my job). And so the fun began.

Instead of working out as we would have, Jilly dragged me to a bunch of hobby-type stores, grocery stores, etc., to round up a bunch of seemingly random idle things from which she could create her masterpiece. And so the night began…baking, blending, mixing, lots of colored frosting all over, and soon afterwards….waaalaaaa – a cake. But better than a cake…a golf course cake!

Let me digress by stating that this is Jilly’s very first decorating cake masterpiece attempt. She used to decorate cookies on a professional level, but that was 15 years ago. She has never done cakes like this but she always likes to set her sites big. So she magically transformed ice cream cones into pine trees, coconut flakes into grass and graham crackers into a sand-trap. Had she been allowed to purchase fondant, which is a staple in the professional cake decorator’s arsenal, she would have probably gone crazy with designing little golfers and golf clubs and any other golfing paraphernalia she could dream up…but I had to draw the line somewhere…I mean we still had to watch our red box movie and I needed my beauty sleep (9pm people!).

It was a huge success, at least in the Challis abode. A german chocolate cake with homemade (that’s right HOMEMADE) buttercream icing, coconut, graham crackers and ice cream cones. I think that Bobby is in for a real treat…one way better than just a card. Although I can’t really take any credit for the cake, I will get to enjoy eating it during the celebrations in the office tomorrow…I’ll tell you how it is! (the whole two of you who read this, and Jilly of course).

Jake out.

Thanks so much! It was a real treat to make – I hope to do this on a “professional” level someday soon.

The cake looks stunning! Fantastic job – I would never have known it wasn’t “professional”
