Annapolis, Maryland 2013

May 20, 2013
May 20, 2013

Storm is a brewingAnnapolis, Maryland is really beautiful and was so much fun to visit. We spent 4 days aboard Zufriedan, a 37-foot sloop rig with our captain Dave. We were going for our ASA 104 bareboat chartering certification, which we accomplished with flying colors. This trip was a little bit different than our last one to the Florida Keys because it was more about the inner-workings of the sailboat. Yes, we did a lot of sailing, but it was equally important to learn about how to work all of the systems aboard the boat, and maintain them.

The Great Pancake Search

May 19, 2013
May 19, 2013

We did it! What are you talking about? Well, we are talking about our 2-month-long quest to find the “perfect” pancake recipe. Let me preface this by saying where this idea came from. One morning, Jake and I went to our favorite breakfast spot, The Huckleberry, in Louisville, Colorado. If you have never been there, DROP EVERYTHING…..AND GO THERE!!!

They have the greatest breakfast items that we have ever had, (and believe me, Jake has had his fair-share). Well, we went there one day a few months ago, and I had my heart set on a waffle for breakfast. I knew they had amazing waffles, so I was really excited! When I got there, though, it appeared they removed waffles from their menu (as they often change things up seasonally). I was really disappointed, but I went with my old stand-by, the huevos rancheros (which is unlike any other), with fresh rice, avocado, eggs, hard-tostada, super spicy green salsa (homemade)….and LOTS of yummy cheese….but I digress.

Where Did Jake and Jill Go???

May 6, 2013
May 6, 2013

Here we are!!!

Wow it has been almost half a year since we’ve been on here – notice anything different? Its been quite some time and a lot has happened. Jake and I bought a house in Boulder.

New Home - Kitchen

lulu1We have tons of plans in our near future. We have been climbing like maniacs, sailing and general working-out over the winter, as well as revamping our new “sweet pad”.

I have also been working A TON, as well as travelling for work, family, and general fun. Lots to celebrate with the birth of our niece, my dad becoming catholic, baby showers, my grandma’s 90th birthday and so much more. We also have a big trip to Annapolis, Maryland in a week that will be amazing, and get us our 104 Certification from the ASA (American Sailing Association), so that we can charter our own yacht.

Summer Biking

August 21, 2012
August 21, 2012

bikeSince I am an avid environmentalist (as you well know), I have decided to use this resource as a sort of online journal to catalogue my training for The Tour Divide. I have put in about 30 miles so far (which is NOTHING!). Went to Evergreen with some friends a few weeks ago to really get my handle on things – I learned some great techniques for riding both up and down trails with rocks, debris, logs, etc. I have found that now I am much more confident riding on easier trails because of this! (Thanks Daylene and Lauren!).

I’ve ridden all summer and I love it. Put in about 100 miles a week which isn’t a ton, but its really fun for me. I’m learning on clipless pedals and have taken a few spills already, but managed to get back up and kept on going. I’m improving a lot as well, and its really a rewarding experience.

Tour Divide Time

August 5, 2012
August 5, 2012

Well its not the official day 1, but it is MY day 1….I don’t know if it is crazy or stupid or whatever, but I was really inspired by an article I read last week on my way to work (on the bus of course). This guy, Justin, from Denver, rode his bike from Canada to Mexico on the Great Divide…that is over 2700 miles of backcountry travel with nothing but what you can carry on your back and your bike…The “Tour Divide” is the name of the ultra-cycling challenge.

Joe’s Valley

May 22, 2012
May 22, 2012

The desert is probably the most beautiful place in the world! The bouldering is spectacular too!

We took a nice trip to Joe’s Valley, in Orangeville, Utah, about 2 hours west of Moab. Joe’s Valley is pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Only climbers know of its existence, because it has such an abundance of bouldering valleys in a fantastic location (because its not overly crowded).

We spent 5 days camping and climbing in the desert. Life was simple. We ate really well at camp, had a lot of R&R, and got a good amount of hard climbing in. It was also beautiful. Nothing beats a long trip in the middle of nowhere to reset your circuits.
