Wild Iris, WY 2013

June 24, 2013
June 24, 2013

Let me preface by saying that this trip has been in the back of my head for 2 long years. I read a small blip about an area called “Wild Iris” located about 25 miles south of Lander, WY and promptly bought the only guide book written for the area. Ever since then, I have been planning a trip. Unfortunately, I plan A LOT of trips and this one always took a back burner until this past weekend.

The evening before our planned early-morning departure, Jill was running some last-minute errands driving our ever-faithful Dodge Caravan when out of nowhere, it lost power. We just had it tuned up and put new wheels on it less than a week ago, so this was very much not expected. Thankfully the car re-started and she made it home to tell me the tale. I promptly tested the most likely suspect, the alternator, and the tester simply read, “ALTERNATOR BAD”. It was 12 hours before our scheduled departure.

A Dandy of a Time

June 11, 2013
June 11, 2013

dandyGood Day ladies and Gents, Boys and Girls. We hope everyone is making the most of their summer so far, because we sure are! This summer is the first summer in 6 years that we have NOT played music/shows all summer. So now we have the freedom to go see shows like we did last night at the Gothic Theater: The Dandy Warhols!!!

They are one of my very favorite bands (and have been around for A LONG time). They played the entire record: “Thirteen Tales of Bohemia” in order, followed by a sing along and a few newer songs. It felt really great to go out to a show and NOT have to load in at 5pm, sound-check, wait around for hours doing nothing, playing for 45 minutes (which was always very fun), then staying until the venue closes to get paid (usually about as much as gas money would cost to get to and fro the venue).

We are very much enjoying just being fans for the movement. Stay tuned to jakeandjill because we have loads of fun adventures coming up this summer and as always Jill’s photography will be all over it.

Just Another Weekend

June 10, 2013
June 10, 2013

It was an average Friday afternoon at work, nearing the end of yet another workday (workweek!) and a coworker asked me “What are ya’all doing this weekend?”. I replied, “not really anything different from any other weekend.” But our “average” weekend is anything but average for the normal human. Our weekends are generally filled with adventure, multiple action-packed sports, and entertainment to the likes that most people might consider the “time of their lives”. So that inspired me to write about it. ‘Just another Weekend’

Bike Commuting 101: What’s in the Bag?

May 27, 2013
May 27, 2013

(clearning throat)

Good Day class, and Welcome to your first lesson on Bike Commuting. Today, we will be discussing one of the most important things in bike-commuting: THE BAG AND THE TOOLS.

What gives me the creditability to discuss such a topic you ask? It could be argued that I have none, but I have been a very avid bike commuter for 8-or-so years in Boulder, Colorado (which happens to be one of the most bike-friendly cities in America, second only to Portland, Oregon). Currently, I ride approximately 20 to 26 miles a day (depending on my path), 4 days per week; which is about 80-100 miles-per-week that I need to be well prepared for any issue or disaster. So, without further adeau, let’s get started.

Annapolis, Maryland 2013

May 20, 2013
May 20, 2013

Storm is a brewingAnnapolis, Maryland is really beautiful and was so much fun to visit. We spent 4 days aboard Zufriedan, a 37-foot sloop rig with our captain Dave. We were going for our ASA 104 bareboat chartering certification, which we accomplished with flying colors. This trip was a little bit different than our last one to the Florida Keys because it was more about the inner-workings of the sailboat. Yes, we did a lot of sailing, but it was equally important to learn about how to work all of the systems aboard the boat, and maintain them.

The Great Pancake Search

May 19, 2013
May 19, 2013

We did it! What are you talking about? Well, we are talking about our 2-month-long quest to find the “perfect” pancake recipe. Let me preface this by saying where this idea came from. One morning, Jake and I went to our favorite breakfast spot, The Huckleberry, in Louisville, Colorado. If you have never been there, DROP EVERYTHING…..AND GO THERE!!!

They have the greatest breakfast items that we have ever had, (and believe me, Jake has had his fair-share). Well, we went there one day a few months ago, and I had my heart set on a waffle for breakfast. I knew they had amazing waffles, so I was really excited! When I got there, though, it appeared they removed waffles from their menu (as they often change things up seasonally). I was really disappointed, but I went with my old stand-by, the huevos rancheros (which is unlike any other), with fresh rice, avocado, eggs, hard-tostada, super spicy green salsa (homemade)….and LOTS of yummy cheese….but I digress.
