You’re Not Hardcore Unless You Live Hardcore: Revamped Motivation

March 24, 2014
March 24, 2014

Month 8 on the quest for 5.13a (yeah…moving though these hard grades takes time) feels like forever now. I have heard that one benefit of taking time off from climbing *from an injury* is renewed motivation. After nearly a month off of climbing (for me, Jake) I have just that. Generally speaking, I’m always pretty motivated when working out; 8/10 workouts I’m rip-roaring and ready to go! Note – Jilly has not taken off from climbing and has been crushing it the last 2 months – climbing harder than she ever has before and better than 90% of the men in our gym.

New Frontiers

March 1, 2014
March 1, 2014

For the past few months, I have been working on making myself healthier…Really for the past 10 years since moving to Boulder, Colorado. But let me digress a little bit.

Boulder is known for its community’s “healthy” lifestyle. It’s actually more of the stereotype of overly healthy, granola eating, hippie cultured, pot smoking people who somehow manage to NOT work, do yoga all day long and afford to live in this extraordinary place seemingly without effort (and lots of expendable cash). The reality is not quite so extreme, yet it does lend itself to the stereotype more oft than not. There are a lot of freeloading “hippies”; a lot of pot smokers (even before pot was legal); a lot of free-thinking, overly sensitive foodies; a lot of very high-level athletes; Trophy wives who only have to look good for their husbands and raise the kids; and RICH PEOPLE. But, there are also a TON of very average, normal people too.

Its Cake Time!

February 21, 2014
February 21, 2014

So I was at work today….as I am everyday…working diligently and I realized that this weekend is my boss’s 60th birthday. Now most people wouldn’t care a scrap about this sort of thing, but my boss is actually really awesome and so I asked the office manager / his personal assistant if there were any plans in the works for the big day, to which he replied that he was going to get a card…

LAME.

You’re Not Hardcore Unless You Live Hardcore: On the injury List

February 19, 2014
February 19, 2014

8 months in…whew..we no longer know what a life without training is like. Unfortunately for me (Jake), I injured my ring finger a few weeks ago so I am no longer on the climbing roster for the entire month of February. It’s a little (more like A LOT) depressing! Climbing is a huge physical release for me, and while I am doing other things to train hard, climbing took huge amount of effort and I am finding it hard to feel like I’ve worked hard enough.

So how did I get hurt, you ask? From climbing harder than my body could handle at the time. This is not a new problem or issue for me. Pretty much all climbers suffer small, mild injuries to one body part or another; it could even be argued that every climber out there is climbing with injuries of some kind.

Happy Valentines Day

February 14, 2014
February 14, 2014

YAY Valentines Day! WOOO!!!!

I awoke to a bouquet of flowers, chocolate candy and the greatest “homemade” poem that I’ve ever laid eyes on. I have the best husband in the universe (and then some!). We decided that we are going to stay in and cook dinner rather than go out…it’s too crowded and expensive. We are going to do a “Stay-in” date with dinner and a movie.

Here’s my personal poem, trademark by Jacob Challis:

I hate our house but I love you in it
I hate babies but I love that you’re my baby
I hate most places but love whatever place you’re in
I hate this font but love that you always know the name
I hate our friends but I love that you will always be my best friend
I love rum…oh wait…this is my hate list….disregard
I hate everything but I love everything about you
I hate stuff but love that you’re HOT STUFF!!!
You’re the only person on earth that I could hate everything with…
and love everything about.
-Love Mr. Challis

PS – Jake doesn’t really hate our friends, but it worked well in the poem! 🙂

HAPPY VDAY EVERYONE!!!!!

Kitchari Cleanse

January 10, 2014
January 10, 2014

After the long holiday season of eating and eating (and more eating), I felt the need to do a gentle cleanse to get me back on track to my normal at-home-diet. We ate tons of yummy (and not so healthy) food over the last month, which has left me feeling a bit sluggish. I feel like I gained about 10 pounds, even though I remained pretty active during that time. I doubt I actually gained that much, but still I decided that I needed to do a cleanse to feel back to normal.
