Part 4: You’re not hardcore unless you live hardcore – How to Eat like an Athlete

August 28, 2013
August 28, 2013

Many people ask us how we manage to do all the things that we do. It’s true, we pack a lot of stuff into 24 hours / 7 days a week. A big part of our active lifestyle stems from what and how we eat. And lets be honest, who doesn’t LOVE food?

Part 3: You’re not hardcore unless you live hardcore: Weekly Journal

August 14, 2013
August 14, 2013

I thought it might be a fun idea to write a journal of our activity level for one week. This is not a new thing for us, as we’ve kept training journals in the past, but we always slack off on maintaining them for more than a few days.

Why is this a good idea? Because we can look back and see what we’ve done, to amp it up for the next round. We will also be able to see trends on how diet/sleep/stress-levels effect energy and performance. Ultimately this will help to keep us operating at a very high level. (note: there are always those crap days where you just can’t perform to your optimum level no matter what, and that is okay…its just how it goes sometimes)

Part 2: A few weeks in

July 24, 2013
July 24, 2013

Good Day Folks and Folkettes! We are a few weeks into training and things are going well. The tempo is several paces more than the norm. But its good. Sleep has become much more essential (9-10 hours), but we are in a great routine and having tons of fun. Jill has been very busy with work so she can’t devote quite as much time as I do, but I LOVE it. I feel like a sled dog…the more excercise (and food) I get, the better behaved I am. Jilly would agree.

Part 1: You’re not hardcore unless you live hardcore: The Quest for 5.13a, E7, 7c+ or 9b

July 14, 2013
July 14, 2013

Rock climbing is a physically and mentally demanding sport. It will test your strength, endurance, agility, and balance along with your mental control. In rock climbing, climbs have grades that describe the difficulty and danger that you can expect with a climb. The grading system factors several qualities including the technical demand of the moves, strength and stamina required, the level of committment (mental control) required and the difficulty of protection. Anything that is considered rock climbing requires the use of a 3 point stance (Two hands and a foot or two feet and a hand) on the rock, and it begins at level 5.0. This is called the Yosemite Decimal System.

Wild Iris, WY 2013

June 24, 2013
June 24, 2013

Let me preface by saying that this trip has been in the back of my head for 2 long years. I read a small blip about an area called “Wild Iris” located about 25 miles south of Lander, WY and promptly bought the only guide book written for the area. Ever since then, I have been planning a trip. Unfortunately, I plan A LOT of trips and this one always took a back burner until this past weekend.

The evening before our planned early-morning departure, Jill was running some last-minute errands driving our ever-faithful Dodge Caravan when out of nowhere, it lost power. We just had it tuned up and put new wheels on it less than a week ago, so this was very much not expected. Thankfully the car re-started and she made it home to tell me the tale. I promptly tested the most likely suspect, the alternator, and the tester simply read, “ALTERNATOR BAD”. It was 12 hours before our scheduled departure.

Joe’s Valley

May 22, 2012
May 22, 2012

The desert is probably the most beautiful place in the world! The bouldering is spectacular too!

We took a nice trip to Joe’s Valley, in Orangeville, Utah, about 2 hours west of Moab. Joe’s Valley is pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Only climbers know of its existence, because it has such an abundance of bouldering valleys in a fantastic location (because its not overly crowded).

We spent 5 days camping and climbing in the desert. Life was simple. We ate really well at camp, had a lot of R&R, and got a good amount of hard climbing in. It was also beautiful. Nothing beats a long trip in the middle of nowhere to reset your circuits.
